4 & 5 february - Jasper Hagenaar

This sixth Malerei account the paintings of artist Jasper Hagenaar (1977, Tilburg)

"Hagenaar does not just let us stay in the paradise of 'Once upon a time'. There is always a sense of failure or threat present in his work. By adding a fraction of gray to bright colors Hagenaar has been "graying" his color scheme which suggests that he was exiled from that time and from youth in general. His work can certainly not be called naive. Nor is it a creamy romance, the images have a dark undertone, the palm does not only refer to paradisiacal places but also to hurricanes that have blown, whether or not in a political sence."

"The elusiveness of the paintings of Jasper Hagenaar is precisely its strength. The paintings are about painting. It shows what worlds you can evoke with paint and imagination without compromising to the laws of reality. The ultimate temptation of painting is the ability to create an autonomous reality, something Jasper Hagenaar eagerly makes use of."
